Charlie Chan - Portrait

Pencil on Paper

In June my dad emailed me a picture of a few of his favorite detective movie characters and asked me to draw them. I was in the middle of a lot of different projects so I told him I couldn't do it right now, but I would be happy to at a later time. I think Christmas is a good time, so I'll be posting some portraits. This is Warner Oland as Charlie Chan.
Let me just say that I am not a professional portrait artist. After the Bert (Dick Van Dyke) research portrait I posted months back I realized that most people, on the outside of fine art and illustration work, have a specific idea of what makes an artist and what they define as art. A lot of people say "I don't get it," including my loving husband, about my paper sculptures. I'm used to it and I love to hear the wisdom of other creative professionals that have family and friends that "don't get it" either.

Anniversary Piece

Blog Article: Palm Trees & Pixie Dust

I waited to post until the couple received the artwork. It’s still a few days away from their anniversary and it arrived safely.

The couple was married at Walt Disney World. They specifically requested the monorail be predominate; castle, squirrels, their pet rabbit and some other details, to be included. I added the Florida Gator mascot. They are both Florida Gators and the groom wore an orange and blue striped shirt. The bride has a pie-eyed Minnie tattoo and the Groom gave the bride a card, on their wedding day, with the spaghetti scene of Lady and the Tramp.

The artwork fits into a custom made shadow box frame.

Happy First Anniversary, Stephanie & David! It was a pleasure working with you.

Just One Bite

                                                                  " Just One Bite-Creepy"

Happy Halloween! Available for purchase. $1200.
This was inspired by the Disney Store wall artwork. I needed to make this idea as a prelude to a future Lord of the Rings piece.

Endor Treetop

Susanita's Little Gallery – Kids Adventure exhibit piece. The 1980′s toy Ewok village was an inspiration for this piece. I started making this months ago and I recently received the gameinformer magazine October issue and on page 37 the Lego Star Wars Ewok Village is featured. It’s 2013 and that toy is still a big seller!

John Deere Tractor

Time-lapse Video - John Deere Tractor
My computer crashed and I had to make this tractor for a client by using just a picture she had sent me. This was a challenge, but I like the way it turned out. I didn’t use any computer programs or print outs. I used a ruler a lot and tried to keep the pieces symmetrical.

Smurfs & Smurfette Cake Toppers

Cake toppers for a good friend's daughter. Happy birthday Haylee!

Time-lapse Video (Ewok Maquette) – Kids Adventure Piece

Susanita's Little Gallery is having an exhibit for kids adventure films from the 80's. I chose the Ewoks. I used references from both Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and the Ewok movies. Few people truly appreciate the spin off Ewok films. I grew up with them so it's great to watch those films with my own little ones.
I attached a time-lapse video to show how I made the Ewok figures. I still have a few characters and details to add.

Princess Cake Topper

The client wanted a pink princess cake top for her daughters birthday cake. Not really Disney but a princess. I was given creative freedom so I decided to use a lot of different references for this piece. For the dress I used Charlotte La Bouff  (Princess and the Frog). I made a huge pink dress and a hot pink bow to match the cake. The cake she is holding matches the cake the princess is on top of , white with black swirls. Since a one year old princess party is more about the mom than the daughter (I have two girls so I should know) I decided to use Aurora as a face reference. Her moms favorite princess is Aurora and she looks just like her. The birthday girl has blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes so I made the quintessential blonde hair, blue eyed princess with a big pink dress. I watched hair tutorials to get that side swept hair right.

Anniversary Bride- Finished & Time-lapse Video

Bride & Groom

The bride is the first of two figures and a background for an anniversary commission piece.
Below is a link to a time-lapse video to make her. It's a very long process so I have to create multiple videos. Feel free to skip around or skip to the end for those of you that don't study paper sculpture.

Paper Artists Unite!

Last weekend I had the great pleasure to hang out with an internationally famous paper artist, Jeff Nishinaka, and the equally talented paper artist, Jackie Huang. Jeff was so welcoming and gracious at his studio. I learned so much and we had such a fun time with everyone there. Jackie and I got coffee after, so I picked her talented and knowledgeable brain until we had to call it a night. Thank you guys for such a wonderful time! Jackie, I'm bummed we didn't get a picture together.
Check out their work at http://www.jeffnishinaka.com/

Meeting Disney Legends

Me and John Musker. I didn't cry meeting him but I was just holding it in.

Me and Nik Ranieri. What a joy and blessing it was to meet him.

Me and the great Bob Gurr.

Me, Rick Dempsey and, in my opinion, a future Disney princess.

Raspberry Ice, Cakes & Tea-Bert&Fox

"A face in the picture would bother me, so I'd rub it out with the turpentine and do it over." -Norman Rockwell

Bert's face bothered me so I did it again and added the great Milt Kahl fox. I didn't like that the first Bert had no interaction with anything and kind of stared out to nowhere. This is a much better and more playful scene. When I'm working on art pieces and I get really discouraged I will look up quotes from people like Norman Rockwell, Pablo Picasso and Walt Disney. Some of Norman Rockwell's and Picasso's are my favorites.

Raspberry Ice, Cakes & Tea-Finished

So I'm finally finished! I pretty much got to do everything that I wanted to on this piece but, to be honest, I could have kept going. I wanted to do an entire carousel, the barnyard animals, Bert as a One-man band, Mary sitting on a cloud with her umbrella propped into the cloud, Mary Poppins coming out of the sky (using fishing wire), the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Band...oh the endless possibilities! But then there is that pesky due date. This was a dream to do and I'm bummed it's over. I'll be dropping it off at the Walt Disney Archives this week so I hope everyone there enjoys it. I love Brittney Lee's paper art and artwork so part of me wants it to break a little bit so they will have to call her over to come fix it;)
